Historians
Historians research, analyze, interpret, and write about the past by studying historical documents and sources. They research, analyze, record, and interpret the past as recorded in sources, such as government and institutional records, newspapers and other periodicals, photographs, interviews, films, electronic media, and unpublished manuscripts, such as personal diaries and letters. Historians must travel to carry out research. Most work full time. Although most historian positions require a master’s degree, some research positions require a doctoral degree. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree may qualify for some entry-level positions, but most will find jobs in different fields. The median annual wage for historians was $59,120 in May 2017. Employment of historians is projected to grow 6 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Competition for jobs may be very strong because there are few positions available relative to the number of people seeking jobs in the field.

Appraise, edit, and direct safekeeping of permanent records and historically valuable documents. Participate in research activities based on archival materials. The median annual wage for archivists was $51,760 in May 2017

Teach courses in human history and historiography. The median annual wage for postsecondary history teachers was $72,690 in May 2017.
