Announcers present music, news, and sports and may provide commentary or interview guests about these or other important topics. Some act as masters of ceremonies (emcees) or disc jockeys (DJs) at weddings, parties, or clubs. Many announcers work in radio and television studios. Some announcers are self-employed; others work part time. Educational requirements for announcers vary. Radio and television announcers typically need a bachelor’s degree in journalism, broadcasting, or communications, along with other experience gained from internships or working at their college radio or television station. Public address announcers typically need a high school diploma with some short-term on-the-job training. The median annual wage for public address system and other announcers was $28,440 in May 2017. The median annual wage for radio and television announcers was $32,450 in May 2017. Overall employment of announcers is projected to decline 9 percent from 2016 to 2026. Experienced, formally trained announcers should have the best job prospects.

Broadcast News Analysts

Analyze, interpret, and broadcast news received from various sources. The median annual wage for public address system and other announcers was $62,910 in May 2017.

Editors

Plan, coordinate, or edit content of material for publication. May review proposals and drafts for possible publication. Includes technical editors. The median annual wage for editors was $58,770 in May 2017. Employment of editors is projected to show little or no change from 2016 to 2026, as print media continue to face strong pressure from online publications. Competition for jobs with established newspapers and magazines will be particularly strong.

Reporters and Correspondents

Collect and analyze facts about newsworthy events by interview, investigation, or observation. Report and write stories for newspaper, news magazine, radio, or television. The median annual wage for reporters and correspondents was $39,370 in May 2017.

Public Relations Specialists

Engage in promoting or creating an intended public image for individuals, groups, or organizations. May write or select material for release to various communications media. The median annual wage for public relations specialists was $59,300 in May 2017. Employment of public relations specialists is projected to grow 9 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The need for organizations to maintain their public image will continue to drive employment growth. Candidates can expect strong competition for jobs at advertising and public relations firms and organizations with large media exposure.

Communications Teachers, Postsecondary

Teach courses in communications, such as organizational communications, public relations, radio/television broadcasting, and journalism. Includes both teachers primarily engaged in teaching and those who do a combination of teaching and research. The median annual wage for postsecondary communications teachers was $66,510 in May 2017.
