Architectural and Engineering Managers

Architectural and engineering managers plan, direct, and coordinate activities in architectural and engineering companies. Most architectural and engineering managers work in offices, although some may also work in research laboratories and industrial production plants or at construction sites. Most work full time, and about half worked more than 40 hours a week in 2016. Architectural and engineering managers typically need at least a bachelor’s degree and considerable work experience as an architect or engineer. The median annual wage for architectural and engineering managers was $137,720 in May 2017. Employment of architectural and engineering managers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Employment growth will largely reflect the growth of the industries in which these managers are employed.

Architects

Plan and design structures, such as private residences, office buildings, theaters, factories, and other structural property. The median annual wage for architects was $78,470 in May 2017. Employment of architects is projected to grow 4 percent from 2016 to 2026, slower than the average for all occupations. With a high number of students graduating with degrees in architecture, strong competition for internships and jobs is expected.

Civil Engineers

Perform engineering duties in planning, designing and overseeing construction and maintenance of building structures, and facilities, such as roads, railroads, airports, bridges, harbors, channels, dams, irrigation projects, pipelines, power plants, and water and sewage systems. Includes architectural, structural, traffic, ocean, and geo-technical engineers. The median annual wage for civil engineers was $84,770 in May 2017. Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow 11 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. As infrastructure continues to age, civil engineers will be needed to manage projects to rebuild, repair, and upgrade bridges, roads, levees, dams, airports, buildings, and structures of all types.
