Accountants and Auditors

Accountants and auditors prepare and examine financial records. They ensure that financial records are accurate and that taxes are paid properly and on time. Accountants and auditors assess financial operations and work to help ensure that organizations run efficiently. Most accountants and auditors work full time. In 2016, about 1 in 5 worked more than 40 hours per week. Overtime hours are typical at certain times of the year, such as at the end of the budget year or during tax season. Most employers require a candidate to have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field. Certification within a specific field of accounting improves job prospects. For example, many accountants become Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). The median annual wage for accountants and auditors was $69,350 in May 2017. Employment of accountants and auditors is projected to grow 10 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. In general, employment growth of accountants and auditors is expected to be closely tied to the health of the overall economy. As the economy grows, more workers should be needed to prepare and examine financial records.

Budget Analysts

Budget analysts help public and private institutions organize their finances. They prepare budget reports and monitor institutional spending. Budget analysts work in government agencies, universities, and private companies. Most work full time. A bachelor’s degree is typically required to become a budget analyst. Courses in accounting, economics, and statistics are helpful. The median annual wage for budget analysts was $75,240 in May 2017. Employment of budget analysts is projected to grow 7 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The demand for budget analysts should continue because of the importance of their role in managing the allocation of funds in both governments and businesses.

Credit Analysts

Conduct quantitative analyses of information affecting investment programs of public or private institutions. The median annual wage for credit analysts was $88,300 in May 2017.

Financial Examiners

Financial examiners ensure compliance with laws governing financial institutions and transactions. They review balance sheets, evaluate the risk level of loans, and assess bank management. Most financial examiners work for the finance and insurance industry, the federal government, or state governments. Most financial examiners worked full time in 2016. Financial examiners typically need a bachelor’s degree that includes some coursework in accounting. Entry-level examiners are trained on the job by senior examiners. The median annual wage for financial examiners was $81,690 in May 2017. Employment of financial examiners is projected to grow 10 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Financial examiners will be in demand as financial institutions seek help with federal regulatory compliance.

Financial Managers

Plan, direct, or coordinate accounting, investing, banking, insurance, securities, and other financial activities of a branch, office, or department of an establishment. The median annual wage for financial managers was $125,080 in May 2017. Employment of financial managers is projected to grow 19 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Several core functions of financial managers, including risk management and cash management, are expected to be in high demand over the next decade.
